Exercise in Chronic Disease

Cardiorespiratory Exercise & Resistance Exercise:
When possible, adults with chronic conditions or disabilities should follow the same guidelines as other Adults. If unable to fulfill the guidelines, they should seek to participate in exercise as much as their body allows and should avoid inactivity.
*Adults with chronic conditions or symptoms should be under the care of a health care provider.
*It may be beneficial for those with chronic medical conditions to consult with a provider for guidance on the type and amount of physical activity.
Exercise in those with Osteoporosis

Preventing Osteoporosis with Exercise:
Weight-bearing endurance activities (WBEA): 3-5 x/wk
Moderate to High intensity aerobic exercise: 30-60 min/day
Resistance exercise (weight lifting): 2-3 x/wk + balance exercises for elderly
Treating Osteoporosis with Exercise:
1-3 sets (5-8 repetitions per set) of 4-6 weight-bearing, lower body strengthening exercises 2-3 times per week
Can add a weighted vest & therabands
Addition of balance exercises
Avoid high impact exercise, spinal flexion against resistance, spinal extension, high compressive forces on the spine, quick trunk rotation.
